Throughout the years several believer songwriters
and poets have asked me for guidelines they should know in order
to improve their writings. Here are some simple, essential guidelines
that I pray will be of benefit to you:
- Select your subject. Decide exactly what you
want to write about. Before you put your pen to the paper be very
clear in your mind and emotionally concerned about your subject.
Be specific.
- Go to God's Word and study in detail what is
written about the subject you have chosen. Utilize all resources,
including teachings and knowledgeable believers. Get an accurate
knowledge of the subject, and its emotional content from God's
perspective.
- Choose your approach. Consider several ways
in which you could convey your message. Single out the one approach
that would best convey the emotional impact. Make it as interesting
as possible.
- Think of your listener. Why are you writing
this song or poem? Your motive should be to give God praise and
glory, thus inspiring another person to do likewise. Keep it simple.
Write so clearly that a child could understand. Using hidden meanings
might confuse the listener.
- Stay positive. Insulting criticism and condemnatory
complaining do not help people. "Don't do this." and "You can't
do that." are alienating. Tell your listener what they can do
to become a believer or a better believer.
- Stay on the subject. Write about only one subject
matter. Be sure you do not stray from your initial concept. Having
two or three subjects in one song is confusing. Be concise and
keep it short, say what you have to say in three or four minutes.
Should you find your song or poem rambles on edit out unnecessary
words, lines or verses.
- Share your song or poem. You have done your
best. Now share God's heart and your heart to inspire someone
else, anyone, anytime and anyplace.
God Bless You All,
Ted Ferrell
