SOUNDING OUT:
Hiding The Word In Our Hearts
Someone asked
me recently, “What does it mean when someone says that a
person has a lot of heart?” I said, “I don’t
know. The next time you hear someone say that, ask him what he
means.” People may be quick to judge others as having or
not having “heart,” but few people really know how
to develop their heart.
Psalm 119:11 is one of the fundamental
verses on developing our heart. It was one of the first verses
that I memorized and really lays a good foundation for getting
scripture into our hearts.
Psalm 119:11:
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against
thee.
We take the best thing there is,
God’s Word, and put it in the best place there is, our heart,
for the best reason there is, to not sin against Him. If we want
to develop our intimacy with God, it is going to require us acknowledging
Him and His Word in our daily living. God’s Word is the
greatest reality in life, and when it is hidden in our heart it
will issue in our life.
God has provided for us most abundantly
and most liberally in Christ Jesus. He has given us holy spirit.
He has given us His Word which lays a wonderful path before us.
Jesus Christ “blazed the trail” before us, and we
have the privilege to continue in the path, to walk in his steps,
and do the works of Jesus Christ. In order to do the works of
Jesus Christ we must believe the same words of God that Jesus
believed. When we hide God’s Word in our minds and hearts,
we can have the same success that he did.
Psalm 40:7,8:
Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written
of me,
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God:
yea, thy law is within my heart.
Jesus Christ could do the will of
God because he had hid God’s Word in his heart and he lived
it day by day. He hid God’s Word in his heart and he delighted
in doing God’s will day by day. We have the same privilege
and opportunity to take this wonderful Word of God, the greatest
reality in life, and hide it in our hearts, which is the greatest
place to put it. We do it for the same reason, “to not sin
against Him.” Then we can walk with power and might, vitality
and joy and be the men and women He has called us to be.
