SOUNDING OUT:
Lean on His Everlasting Arms

I love singing Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. It provides a beautiful mind picture that impresses my mind with the privilege I have of enjoying God’s care and protection. When we did the last update of our Family Songbook we added Deuteronomy 33:27 after the hymn in the songbook. We wanted everyone to see the Biblical basis for singing such delightful assurances of God’s care.

Deuteronomy 33:27:
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

A refuge is a shelter or place of safety and protection from danger or distress. God provides a place of safety to which we can retire for rest and protection. His everlasting arms are arms of strength and power, which cradle and embrace us. When He bares His arms for us, we are indeed blessed.

Jeremiah 32:17:
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

There is nothing too hard for the God Who made the heavens and the earth by His great power and outstretched, everlasting arms. There is nothing too hard for Him; just settle in to His embrace and get comfortable. Our God is the Lord, Who changes not. He is not a man that He should lie. What he has promised He will perform! What do you need? Does it seem impossible? It’s not impossible to God! Make Him your refuge! Go to Him for sanctuary!

Luke 1:51 says that “He hath shewed strength with His arm.” Let Him bare His arm for you.. Psalms encourages us repeatedly to do so.

Psalm 62:8: [See also Psalms 46:1,7,11; 48:3; 57:1; 62:7; 94:22]
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah

When we believe the truth it will echo forth from our mouths. Let’s follow the psalmist’s lead and say:

Psalm 91:2:
I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
What will you say of the Lord? I will say, “The LORD is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.” Let’s lean on His everlasting arms today.
